Plymouth Service That Transformed Children’s Lives Wins Prestigious Award

A specialist Plymouth team dedicated to supporting children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN), including autistic children, has won a 2025 Quality Business Award for excellence in care and impact.

Step Up has been recognised as the city’s Best Speech and Language Therapist Service after achieving an outstanding quality score of over 95% and earning Five-
Star ratings for customer satisfaction, service quality, reputation and overall excellence.

Step Up is more than a speech therapy provider. It is also home to the Plymouth Autism Team, offering specialist autism assessments, tailored guidance and training for families and professionals.

The award celebrates Step Up’s transformative impact on the lives of children and families. Parents have praised the team for helping children communicate, connect and thrive.

One parent shared how their toddler, Harry, was non-verbal at two years old and often frustrated. After support from Step Up, the family saw remarkable progress:

“Our son can now say a few words and the tantrums have stopped. He’s a happier child, our bond has increased, and I highly recommend Step Up if you have concerns about your child.”

Another parent reflected on her son Robbie’s journey:

“I was told he may never talk. I can’t thank the Plymouth Autism Team enough – my only regret is that I didn’t start sooner. I’ll be forever grateful.”

Lisa Taylor-Jones, founder and lead therapist at Step Up and the Plymouth Autism Team, said:

“Working with children and supporting them to overcome communication barriers is incredibly rewarding. Helping them express themselves, build confidence and deepen relationships lies at the heart of what we do. This award is a wonderful acknowledgement of the team’s passion and dedication.”

Early identification and personalised, enjoyable one-to-one sessions help children make meaningful progress while feeling confident and supported.

Another local parent, whose son Tom has also thrived with Step Up’s support, said:

“Lisa was absolutely brilliant with my son and me. She had him fully engaged and clearly cares deeply about her work. If anyone has concerns about their child’s speech and language development, I cannot recommend her enough.”
