Athena Magazine

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Athena Magazine?
Athena is a magazine created by and for women in business in Devon. We share stories, advice, experiences, and inspiration from local women, giving them a platform and a community where their voices can be heard.
Athena is for women in business across Devon, whether you’re just starting out, running a small business, freelancing, or already leading a team. If you’re a woman in business with a passion for what you do, Athena is for you.

According to our recent surveys, our magazine is read by women in Devon, who own a business (the age of the businesses vary from start ups to being up and running for over 10 years). We have some women who work for larger organisations, but the vast majority are business owners. You can find more info about our demographic on our advertise with use page, and in our media pack, which we keep updated with key demographic information.

At the moment, Athena is an online only magazine, but we do hope to raise enough money to provide printed copies in the future!

Of course! While our focus is on Devon women in business, the advice, stories, and inspiration inside Athena are valuable wherever you’re based.

Athena Magazine launched the first issue in September 2024. The founders, Fran and Stacey, got together very early in 2024 to start planning the magazine, then launched the first issue later that year. It has been going from strength to strength ever since.

We publish three times a year at the moment, in January, May and September, packed with fresh stories, advice, and inspiration in every issue.

Yes! You can join our mailing list to receive each issue of the magazine straight to your inbox as soon as it is published.

There are two ways to get your business in the magazine, either as a story or an advert. If you’d like to get featured as a story, you’ll need to send us details of what it is that your business does that would make an interesting story, and there’s a whole guide for this on our ‘contribute’ page, and a form to fill in with details. Or you can email your press release to hello@athenamagazine.co.uk. There are lots of advertising options too, which you can find on our Advertise With Us page on this website.

We get so many businesses (so many!) contacting us with stories they’d like to have printed in the mag, and we simply can’t print them all. But we do file any we receive in case they’d be a great fit for a future issue. To get the best chance of getting your article printed, please be sure to read our guide on the ‘contribute’ page of our website, which gives great tips on how to best pitch an article to our magazine (or any magazine!). It may take a while for us to get to yours even if it’s great as we get so many.

Yes! Absolutely. That’s called an ‘advertorial’ which is essentially an paid for article. Advertorials are where you pay for an advert that looks like an article, and they’re a great way to get your business noticed. It’s also a great way to ‘jump the queue’ if you’re keen to get an article featured in our magazine. To get more details about how this could work for your business, please get in touch, as it’s the sort of thing that’s better for us to discuss with you, so we can help you make it work for your business.

Athena Magazine is a magazine for Devon women in business, so not usually no. But if it’s something that serves the women of Devon, we might consider it (for example, a business networking organisation that serves the whole of the UK that has a Devon event). Priority will always be given to the women who run businesses that are based in Devon, because that is who our magazine is for, and who we want to shine a light on.

Yes, Athena exists to champion and celebrate women in business. That said, if the business is owned or run by men as well as women, that’s fine – but we will want to focus on the women. We also welcome supportive allies who want to advertise or collaborate.

Absolutely. We offer advertising opportunities tailored to small and growing businesses. It’s a great way to reach women in business across Devon. See our “Advertise” page for rates and details.

We have a price list for ads in our media pack, and that includes some adverts ‘packages’ where you get a discounted rate for multiple adverts.

Not usually. When you book an advert, you’ll need to send us the advert that you would like placed, set to the right size (which is shown in our media pack). But if you struggle with creating your own, we can do this for an extra fee if needed (we need to cover the cost of the time we would spend creating it for you).

Check out our ‘Advertise with us’ page. On there you’ll find details. You can download out media pack to see what options are available and the prices, so you can find an advert to suit your needs and budget. Then you just need to book it. Our directory listings can be booked and paid for online using the buy buttons on that page. For a normal advert, you need to fill in the form on the ‘advertise with us page’ (it’s at the bottom) and we’ll check what spaces we have left at that time, and get in touch with you to book your advert if the space you’re after is available.

It’s best to contact us ASAP, as we only have a certain number of ad spaces in each issue. Once the advert is paid for, the space is booked and it won’t go to anyone else. You won’t need to sent us the ad until a week before the issue you’ve booked comes out, but it’s best to get the advert over to us earlier rather than later if you’re able to,  so if there’s any problems with it (such as it not being quite the right size or something) we’ve got time to work with you to get it fixed.

Cancellations must be made in writing within 7 days of placing the order. If you cancel an advertisement after this period, you may still be liable for the full payment. No refunds will be issued once an advertisement has been published. You are responsible for submitting all advertising content and materials by the agreed-upon deadline. We are not responsible for any missed publication dates or losses incurred due to late submissions.
