A guide to getting featured our magazine (or in other press)

One of the exciting things about our magazine is giving female business owners the chance to get featured in the press. We could really see how so many business owners just don’t have the knowledge to be able to pitch article ideas for magazines to get their business some much needed PR, or how to put together a simple advert to place in a publication.

And do you know what? THAT’S OK! As a small business owner, you know how to do your ‘thing’… the thing you do for your business. Whether that’s being a qualified counsellor, a talented Coach, a whizz at beautiful nails, or countless other skills that women in business have and sell. But no one tells you how to do this other stuff.

So if you want to get featured in a magazine, but not sure where to start, here are our top tips:

1. Approach us with a story

Please don’t email us asking for us to feature you, and that’s it. We need a bit more info. Tell us about what makes your business interesting or newsworthy. Have you done anything really interesting or different? Or have you launched something new? Or done something inspiring?

2. Get to know the magazine first, so you know what we print

Whatever publication you’re approaching to get press in, it’s worth familiarising yourself with the kinds of articles and stories they print, so you can pitch something that they will be interested in featuring.

3. Include images (if you have them)

Magazine stories need great quality pictures to go alongside the article. And unfortunately, phone pics don’t cut it. If you haven’t had a professional photoshoot for your business, it’s worth considering having one done, so you have photos to submit when you’re trying to get press coverage as most publications will expect this. But if you don’t, we can come out and take photos for the article.

4. Stand out, and be patient

Remember, we get emails daily from women who would love to be featured in our magazine (since launched, these emails have reached a couple of hundred with more requests coming in daily) and we simply can’t print them all. We have to select the ones that we know will interest and inspire our readers the most, otherwise the magazine wouldn’t be very interesting.
And if we don’t print your story straight away, that doesn’t mean we won’t! We only have three issues per year (right now) and we have a huge list of stories we want to feature.
